Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons uses a unique design to make reading as easy as possible for ages 3-6. Letters are given a specific look in order to help students to clearly see the difference between letters that are similar (like d and b) or blended sounds (like sh, th, etc). The order of the letters taught was done with the idea of being able to combine letters to produce the maximum number of words, which can be placed into stories as early in the program as possible. Only lower case letters are taught until farther in the program since lower case letters are what we normally read.
Video lessons are available to help parents to hear exactly what the sounds should be that are being introduced. Supplemental materials like sound cards and a progress chart are also available.
Reading Success
I loved this book. I used it with my 6 year old who knew his letters and sounds already and he was reading by the time we were 3/4 of the way through it. I plan to use it again this coming year for my younger child. The book is black and white text and can be boring and/or dry. It was priced right for a starter Language Arts program when I had no idea what I was doing. It gives clear instructions for the teacher along side student instruction. We used a small dry erase board with this program as my child was afraid of making mistakes on a piece of paper and the dry erase took away the fear of mistakes. Open and go program.

Great for some kids
I attempted this curriculum with both my children. My oldest hated it. She has some emotional regulation challenges and was ok with the first several lessons, but as they got longer she became very stressed and overwhelmed even with me breaking the lessons into smaller chunks. The mastery style of learning just did not work for her. My son on the other hand absolutely loved it! He thrived on getting to snuggle up with me and do his lessons with me everyday. When the lessons got longer I still chose to divide them into two parts as even he struggled to sit that long and focus on a single activity. He finished the entire curriculum and it gave him the solid start in reading that he needed. My daughter only made it maybe a third of the way through before we needed to switch to other methods. This is a solid curriculum, but is not for all children! Both of my children also have some speech issues, and due to the nature of the program this was highlighted and at times caused challenges for them in completing the program. Children are required to make all the speech sounds correctly including more challenging ones such as “th” blends that not all kids are capable of. If you have a child with speech issues or delays, you should keep that in mind when considering this curriculum and if it is right for your child.

My five year old knew her letter sounds and was eager to read and this worked well for us. I did not stick to the script further along because she picked up on it very fast and didn’t want to do the monotonous stuff, so I used the script as a guide to keep it pleasant for both of us. She really liked the stories.
