Essentials in Writing was created with the student in mind. Created for Grades 1 -12, the program is available either entirely online or can include print textbooks with online video streaming. Engaging video lessons allow the teacher to model the corencepts being taught before the student is required to produce it back. This program has minimal prep for the parent making it a great option for busy, homeschooling families. Essentials in Literature was created to teach students about classic literature and is available for Grades 7-11.
Writing lessons and assignments are given in small chunks so students do not become overwhelmed. This program is also dyslexia friendly. Free parent/teacher support is available in case of any issues.
Easy to use
I have used levels 4-8 of this program. There are parts I really love and parts I really do not like. First, the positives. I find the program very thorough for teaching essentials. The content of the teaching is excellent. It breaks writing up into simple steps with checklists- perfect for children who need reminders, forget all the steps, and need things not to be overwhelming. This is why we stuck with the program. I love how step by step it is and how its not overwhelming. Next, the cons. Video quality is probably the most disappointing part of this program. Videos are taken of the teacher standing in front of a whiteboard that he uses in the lessons. It is helpful to see him write, and make mistakes and change things, but its boring and it looks fairly low-budget in terms of whoever is doing the filming. I found the sound wasn’t great quality either. I would have loved to see this video quality much improved. However, the actual teaching content is excellent and that is why we stuck with it. I don’t like the grammar portion. Honestly, I skip most of it. I just look at the section and decide what we are doing and what we aren’t going to use. I would prefer if the program also included creative writing, however the program is designed to cover the “essentials” and so it does not cover creative writing. I also found that from year to year, they covered the same projects but with different topics or in a bit more detail. Sometimes we did change the topic to something else similar more of interest to my child. My child found it boring after using it for 4 years and wanted to switch to something else. Overall, the main draw of the program was that it is video-based, so that makes it easier on the parent, and it is step by step and not overwhelming.
